Fine Arts Multiversity 2016 - The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

Join us for lunch and help us set up for our week in Narnia immediately after the service this Sunday.

From July 11-15, 2016, Redemption Church is hosting a:

FINE ARTS MULTIVERSITY

A Marvelous, Masterful, and Magical place for all ages to unleash creative genius.

Join us for our second year as we explore another classic.  Using C.S. Lewis’ The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe as inspiration, all of the sessions take their lead from the characters, imagination, and wonder of Narnia, culminating in a final multigenerational musical theatre production.

Participants of all ages from Grade 1-Grandparents can register for full or half days.  Participants starting Kindergarten in September 2016 are welcome to register for our morning-only sessions.  We will need ALL participants for the FULL DAY on Friday, July 15 to prepare for our final presentation.

Which fine arts will be explored – and what should I expect at these sessions?

Participants will experience the variety of skills required in mounting a theatre production from start to finish.  All participants will be encouraged to try their hand at a variety of activities, but may focus on one or two primary skills.  The degree of involvement in each area (theatre/backstage) will be at the discretion of the director.

THEATRE (Drama, music, choreography)

BACKSTAGE (Set building and design, costumes, props, make-up, technical)

Who is leading the multiversity – and what do they know about fine arts?

CREATIVE DIRECTOR: Aloha Johnson is our enthusiastic leader and she brings to the table more than 30 years of experience working with children of all ages, youth and adults in a variety of settings; from one-on-one, to small groups, to the classroom, to seminars, to audience presentations. Her passion for the arts runs deep and her ability to communicate that passion and pass on the learning is legendary.

With a degree in Fine Arts, a practical application of that degree in visual arts and many theatre genres--including musical theatre, comedy, street theatre, improv and choral music—Aloha utilizes all types of music (classical, sacred, modern) and welcomes all ages into community to provide a unique creative learning experience for all.

Aloha hails from Vancouver and has raised four children who have followed in her creative footsteps and are pursuing their passion for the arts in a variety of ways as well.

PROGRAM COORDINATOR:  Lisl Baker was born and raised in a small arts community in Ontario where she had the privilege of participating in multiple choirs, plays, and musical theatre productions at school and in her community.  She enjoys being on the stage and supporting others so they, too, can shine.  Lisl loves leading teams that nurture life, creativity, and can get things done!

Lisl is a full-time staff member at Redemption Church and is Aloha’s right hand lady when it comes to the logistics, details, and communication involved with our Fine Arts Multiversity.  She is looking forward to gathering and supporting all of the volunteers it will take to pull off what we expect will be another fantastic week of ‘creative genius.’  And she can’t wait to meet YOU!

Parenting with Intention, Purpose, and Fun!

Starting on January 16, Rebecca Janke of Granville Chapel, is offering a 3 session parenting course called: Parenting with Intention, Purpose, and Fun!

WHEN: January 16, 23, and 30 from 9am to 12pm
WHERE: Granville Chapel - 5901 Granville St.
WHO: For parents or youth/childcare workers with children in the age range of 18 months to 14 years.
HOW MUCH: $50 total.  Some childcare spots are available for $5 per child per session.

This is a great way to meet other parents and youth/childcare workers in the broader Christian community and beyond.  Sessions will consist of teaching and small group work.  (Sharing stories, examples, strategy, etc.) Rebecca is a Registered Social Worker and much of her work is based on Gordon Neufeld's research.  Her whole approach is relationship-based; emphasizing the importance of developing healthy relationships between parents and children, setting realistic expectations, and finding necessary support along the way.

Some of the course will include a process of looking at your values  - breaking them down and understanding competing values.   You will also learn how to develop a purpose statement for your family.

You can check out Rebecca's website for more information.
Feel free to contact Lisl through email or call her at 604-732-5577 with any other questions.

Registration forms available at the church.

Christmas Hampers

This season we're helping the Crisis Pregnancy Centre of Vancouver & Richmond by collecting items for Christmas hampers. These hampers are for mothers and their families, all of whom are in low-income situations. Church, would you consider blessing these families by gifting one or more of the following items:

  • Groceries (or a grocery gift card)
  • Presents for infants and children under age 2 (clothing, toys, or books)
  • Diapers and wipes
  • Gifts for mom (ex. soaps, chocolates, and candles)

If you'd like to contribute, please place items in the designated bins that are located to the right of the stage by Sunday, December 13. If you have any additional questions or would like more information, please email Redemption community member, Katrina here.

* Please note that the items need to be new as these hampers are given as gifts to the families.

Also, every Christmas we like to put together small gifts for members of our own church community. If you would like to participate in this, please purchase some grocery gift cards and drop them off in the main office.

* Oikos communities will be assembling Christmas hampers for families in need from Bayview Elementary School.

Fine Arts Multiversity

From July 20-24, 2015, Redemption Church is hosting our first ever

FINE ARTS MULTIVERSITY

A Marvelous, Masterful, & Merry place for all ages to unleash creative genius.

Using the amazing Dr. Seuss as inspiration, all of the sessions take their lead from the colours, rhyme, language, visuals and characters from the stories and wonder of Seuss.  These sessions will each contribute to our Snippets of Seuss" extravaganza, which closes out the week of our multiversity. All are invited to present at the extravaganza, whether it be to the invited audience at the production or in the art gallery.

Participants of all-ages can register for a half or full day of creative learning.

  • 9am-12pm: Dance & Music

  • 1pm-4pm: Art & Drama  (Lunch supervision provided)

We will conclude our week with a celebratory performance.

Music

Have you ever itched to try your hand at songwriting? Do you think you have a song within you just bursting to be heard?  Do you have an important message that needs to be spoken? Do you realize that putting a message to a melody is a powerful way for it to be remembered?

Would you like to be a part of something more powerful than a single voice singing alone? This session will have three parts: 1) the group sing 2) the lyrics of songwriting 3) the melody of songwriting. The goal of the week is to perform the original songs that the individuals/group have composed.

Dance

Movement of any kind is a joy, but in dance there is a particular kind of joy expressed. That is increased exponentially when able to be done with a group. In this session we will be looking at a kind of folkdance called hip hop and the stories it tells.

Art

In this session we will explore Seussian sculpture in the form of papier mache. Whether a mini-sculpture of personal size or a mammoth sculpture done by group effort and included in the sets for our production, there will be something for all creative zaniness. Painting and drawing techniques will also be included.

Theatre

Seuss walks off the page in this session as many of his well-loved books are brought to life in 3D stories with living characters. Be a part of the fun as Sam and Cat battle it out, as Fox and Knox get the audience involved, and some not-so-well-known characters are introduced to the land of the living.
