What is advent?
Advent is a season, celebrated by most of the Christian Church around the world, during which we prepare for Jesus’ arrival. For that is what “Advent” means: “coming”. Many of us spend a lot of time and energy anticipating the “coming” of Christmas: we clean the house, prepare for guests, buy presents and decorate. Advent is not so different: as Christians we take this season to prepare our lives for the arrival of Jesus – not just in Bethlehem as our Saviour, but his final return as King and Judge. Jesus is coming again – of this we are confident: for he is our resurrected King. And yet we wait, for we are in the time between the times: having had a foretaste of his kingdom, we long for it’s fulfillment when Jesus comes again.
Waiting, preparation, and longing. These are central to the season of Advent, and a preparation for Christmas. Christmas is a celebration, for Jesus has come! Advent makes that celebration all the sweeter, for it reminds us that we wait in hope. Jesus has come! Jesus is coming again! Hallelujah!
