Isaiah 5:1-7 and John 15:1-13

With this message we conclude our series on the parables by focusing in on Jesus’ parabolic teaching on a vine and its branches from John 15. Although the gospel of John contains no parables, Jesus’ teaching and illustration about fruitfulness and abiding in the vine shares parable like features. In the broad sense, a parable is simply a story or an analogy where a natural vessel is being used to illustrate something supernatural. Plus, St. John Chrysostom and Pope Benedict XVI used the word ‘parable’ to describe this chapter, and it can be fruitful for us to reflect on this teaching as Jesus disclosing to us something hidden, something that’s not so easy to perceive.
