We launch into a sermon series on the book of Hebrews with this message from Lead Pastor Daniel Kang. The book of Hebrews is a challenging book of understand. It’s challenging because the author of Hebrews wrote this letter to a Jewish audience, an audience that would be very familiar with Israel’s scriptures, history, religious customs, and religious practices. So, the letter is laden with references to things like angels, Moses, the law, the exodus, Aaron and the Levitical priesthood and even the entire sacrificial system. For the contemporary reader, who isn’t as steeped in Judaism like the letter’s original audience, the book of Hebrews the added layer of constant translation and recontextualization for us to grasp the core argument of the letter. But all this constant translation and recontextualizing is well worth it, because the book of Hebrews has the most exalted Christology out of any book in the New Testament.
