We conclude our You Asked For It series with this message on Fallen Leaders. The question we will be exploring is as follows, “What do we do about Philip Yancey? Anything? Do we need to be perfect to preach the gospel?”
In recent years, we have witnessed a troubling number of pastoral scandals involving moral failure, sexual misconduct, spiritual abuse, and the misuse of power. These revelations have shaken the trust of congregations, wounded countless individuals, and damaged the credibility of the Church. Whether these failures are becoming more frequent or simply more visible, they expose a sobering reality: spiritual gifting, public influence, and ministry success are no substitutes for personal integrity and Christlike character.
Guest speaker Hudi Mansell will be coming to teach and reflect on this question with us. You might remember Hudi from our series in the book of Ruth a couple of years ago. Hudi preaches on a theology of the table. Throughout the Gospels, Jesus repeatedly gathers people around tables—not to establish hierarchies of power, but to cultivate relationships marked by hospitality, humility, vulnerability, and love. At the table, Jesus is not simply a teacher addressing a crowd; he is a friend sharing life with others. And at the Last Supper, he kneels to wash his disciples’ feet, redefining leadership through the posture of a servant. These are some of the themes explored in this message.
